Maybe I am weird, but I can pinpoint a specific song or part of a song where I really started to like a certain artist.  With Kirk Whalum, it is the sax solo on Stuff Like That.  This is the version on Q’s Jook Joint.  You have Charlie Wilson, Brandy & Chaka Khan with the vocals.  But when that sax solo came in, I was like, MAN that makes the song.

Kirk Whalum #LoveCoversHis first album, Floppy Disk, came out in 1985, and since then Whalum has released over 25 albums as a solo artist, and as a member of the supergroup BWB.  His new release is called #LoveCovers and as you can tell by the name, Whalum takes some classic songs and makes them his own.

Whalum has released some remakes in the past.  Albums like For You, Unconditional, and Kirk Whalum performs the Babyface Songbook are examples of Whalum’s interpretations.  We also cannot forget Any Love and Give Me The Reason, the work he did on the Forever for Always For Luther series.  Kirk was also featured on several of Luther’s original recordings.

This time around, Whalum is taking some inspirational songs, and putting his spin on the tracks.  As of right now I do not have the musicians and vocalists list, but I can tell you that it is a great sounding album.  I will update you with that information when I receive it.

Here is the track listing:

  • Love On Top
  • Have A Talk with God
  • Use Me
  • Holy Is The Lamb
  • Speak To My Heart
  • God Is Love
  • Wonderful, Merciful Savior
  • Alabaster Box
  • Tomorrow
  • I Will always Love You
  • You Brought The Sunshine
  • What is This (Feat. Donnie McClurkin)

In case you did not know, Kirk played on the original Whitney Houston recording of I Will Always Love You, and this is the first time he has recorded it as a solo artist.
